Homework

At KTC, we believe homework is vital for reinforcing what is learned in the classroom, building independent study habits, and preparing students for future exam success.

Our homework strategy is tailored to support students at every stage of their secondary school journey.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9)

In KS3, our focus is on building strong foundational skills in core subjects using specialised, interactive digital platforms. All homework tasks and specific deadlines are coordinated and tracked via Google Classroom.

Our Core KS3 Learning Platforms

  • Sparx Maths: Data-driven, personalised maths homework. Sparx adapts to each student's current ability level, ensuring tasks are challenging but achievable. Students receive instant feedback on every question.
  • Sparx Reader: A digital reading platform that helps build literacy and comprehension. It provides students with e-books perfectly matched to their reading age and tracks their progress through integrated focus checks.
  • Seneca: Used predominantly for Science, Humanities, and Languages. Seneca uses cognitive science and smart animations to make retrieval practice (quizzing yourself to remember facts) efficient and highly engaging.
  • Google Classroom: The central hub for all schoolwork. If a teacher sets a project, a creative writing task, or an announcement, this is where students and parents will find it.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11)

As students transition into KS4, the focus shifts heavily toward independent revision and exam preparation for their GCSEs or vocational courses. Homework at this stage is designed to help students master long-term retention and exam techniques.

What KS4 Revision Homework Involves

Instead of just completing tasks, KS4 students are guided to use high-impact revision strategies weekly:

  • Past Exam Papers & Questions: Practising under exam conditions to learn how marks are awarded.
  • Flashcards & Mind Maps: Creating physical or digital tools to condense and review vast subject specifications.
  • Targeted Retrieval: Utilising advanced modules on platforms like Seneca or GCSEPod to plug specific knowledge gaps identified by their teachers.
  • Structured Study Timetables: Students are expected to manage their own independent revision calendars leading up to mocks and final examinations.

Guide for Parents: How You Can Help

Do Don't
Check Google Classroom regularly to keep an eye on upcoming deadlines and instructions. Do the work for them. It is much better for a teacher to see what a student struggles with so they can help.
Provide a quiet, consistent study space free from distractions like mobile phones or TV. Let them leave it until Sunday night. Encourage small, manageable chunks of study throughout the week.
Encourage a "give it a go" attitude. If they get stuck on a Sparx Maths problem, encourage them to watch the built-in support video. Ignore extended periods of frustration. If homework is taking significantly longer than it should, let the tutor know.
Need technical support? If your child has misplaced their login details for Sparx, Seneca, or Google Classroom, please contact their form tutor or send an email to admin@kemnal-tkat.org who will pass on it to the necessary member of staff.
