Numeracy (Sparx Maths)
Numeracy for Life
Just as reading is the "master key" to the curriculum, numeracy is the engine that powers logical thinking and problem-solving. Numeracy is more than just doing sums, it is the ability to understand and use maths in every area of life, from managing finances and interpreting data to understanding the world around us.
At KTC, we believe every student is capable of succeeding in maths. Our goal is to build numerical confidence, ensuring that our students in all year groups have the tools they need to tackle challenges with resilience and precision.
What Is Sparx Maths?
Sparx Maths is an online educational platform designed to support the teaching and learning of mathematics, primarily in secondary schools. It is widely used by schools to assign, manage, and assess students’ mathematics homework and independent study. All year groups will be set homework via Sparx Maths.
We have introduced Sparx to every Maths class within our academy to ensure that all pupils can login to their account and know how to complete the homework that will be set.
Key features
- Personalised learning: The platform adapts questions to match each student’s level of understanding.
- Instructional support: Topics are introduced through short explanatory videos before students attempt related questions.
- Automated assessment: Student responses are automatically marked, providing immediate feedback.
- Progress tracking: Teachers can monitor performance, identify areas of difficulty, and adjust instruction accordingly.
Research carried out by Sparx has shown that this type of personalised maths home learning leads to clear progress.

How It Works
Each week, students will be set a homework assignment to complete on the Sparx website and in their exercise book. On a given day each week, teachers will ask pupils to bring in exercise books for checking.
Students must show all the necessary steps in their working out to show how they have reached a calculation. Students MUST write the book work code along with all working out in their exercise books and input answers into the site. The Sparx platform has built in ‘book checks’ and asks pupils to re-enter information from previous questions to ensure they are completing this.
Students can do additional tasks of a similar level called boost tasks and target tasks on for an extra challenge. Independent tasks on any topic at any level can also be completed by students at any time.
Sparx will automatically inform parents and carers via email each week how their child is getting on with the homework.
Sparx homework is not marked as complete until all of the questions have been answered correctly. Sparx believes, and their research has shown, that 60 minutes a week of this type of personalised home learning is the best length for achieving the most impact.
How Do I Log In?
Students should first select their school in the drop-down menu and then login with Google. These are the same login details they use for both Sparx Reader and Sparx Maths.
What Do I Do If I Forget My Password For Sparx?
- Go to Sparx and click ‘forgotten log in details?’ and follow the process.
What Is A Book Code and Why Do I Need It?
A book code is a unique identifier given to each question. Pupils should write this code before writing each question to help organise their work. During bookwork checks, pupils are given a code from a recent question and are asked to recall the correct answer, ensuring they’ve written their workings down clearly in their books.
Weekly Homework Expectations
Sparx Maths homework is set each week, with the following structure:
- Start: Wednesday
- Deadline: Following Wednesday
- Target: 100% completion
- Estimated Time: Around 30 minutes
During school holidays, deadlines are extended to the Wednesday when students return to the Academy. Tutors check weekly completion and award positive or negative points on Class Charts.

Sparx Rewards
Sparx celebrates numeracy progress with a variety of recognition opportunities:
- Milestone Certificates are awarded in rewards assemblies (led by SLT) for Most XP Earned.
How Parents Can Help
You do not need to be an expert in Maths to support your child. You can make a significant difference by:
- Checking Progress: Ask your child to show you their ‘Hand-In’ page once a week to confirm they have reached 100%. You can also set up parental emails to inform you when homework is due and when it has not been started so your child does not miss a deadline.
- Setting a Routine: Encouraging a small amount of work on these platforms a few times a week helps prevent a last-minute rush and aids long-term memory.
- Positive Encouragement: Remind them that Sparx is designed to be personalised to their level, making it challenging but always achievable with effort.
Advice For Parents/Carers To Support Your Child To Complete Homework
Sparx works best on a desktop, a laptop or a tablet such as an iPad. It will be difficult to complete on a mobile phone. Your child will need a sheet of paper or a notebook for working out and to record book codes.
Pupils should find a quiet space and work in the way that best suits them. As Sparx responds to correct and incorrect answers to build a picture of your child’s current level, you should avoid helping them to complete the work. However, encouragement and rewards go a long way!
